As a photographer based in San Diego, there are few places as iconic and stunning as Windansea Beach in La Jolla for an engagement session. The beach, known for its rugged coastline, crystal-clear waters, and picturesque sunsets, provides the perfect backdrop for couples looking to capture their love story in a breathtaking setting. I had the privilege of working with Alexis and Kevin recently at this stunning location, and the session was nothing short of magical.
One of the things I love most about shooting at Windansea Beachis the versatility of the location. Whether you're looking for soft, golden hour light or dramatic sunset skies, the beach offers so many opportunities to get creative. The dramatic rocks and rolling waves add texture and movement to the images, while the nearby cliffs provide a sense of intimacy and seclusion that’s perfect for capturing those quiet, tender moments between couples. It's an ideal spot for couples who want to add a touch of Southern California charm to their engagement photos.
The beauty of Windansea Beach is amplified by its natural light, and for engagement sessions, timing really is everything. For this particular engagement session, I worked with Alexis and Kevin, a couple whose chemistry was undeniable. They even brought their dog to get in a few shots! We met up about an hour before sunset in October, giving us plenty of time to take advantage of the soft, Autumn light as it filtered through the clouds and illuminated the surf. The warm, glowing light made the beach feel even more romantic, and it allowed me to create a series of intimate, dreamy portraits that showcased the couple's love in the most flattering light.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the sky turned into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples. I made sure to capture a few wide shots of the couple against the sweeping, colorful skies, as the waves crashed on the shore. These images are often the ones couples cherish the most because they highlight the emotional connection while also showcasing the dramatic beauty of the location. They even printed them for their wedding save-the-dates and as decoration at their wedding!

The rocky areas around the beach can be a bit uneven, so make sure to bring sturdy footwear for those areas if you plan on exploring the cliffs or getting close to the rocks.

Soft, flowy fabrics can add a romantic feel to the photos and help with movement in the shots. Alexis and Kevin brought a few outfits to create more variety in their portraits. I always recommend this for longer sessions to break things up.
- Expect a Crowd: Windansea Beach can get crowded, especially in the evening when the sunset draws people in. If you’re hoping for a more private, intimate feel, consider scheduling your session on a weekday or earlier in the evening before the sun starts to set.
- Embrace the Ocean: The ocean is a big part of what makes Windansea so special, so don’t be afraid to get a little wet! Some of the best shots come from getting close to the water and capturing the energy of the waves.
Windansea offers something for everyone.
